Mary Dolores Hughes was about 8 years old when adopted by Edward T. Hughes and Nell Bennett. She had been in 5 foster homes since she was born in 1911. When Mary was 9 or 10 years old (after Nells death in 1919), Edward left his carpentry job and went to work for Veterinarian Doc Ortburg at Newcastle, NE. Mrs. Ortburg (Bess Holt or Holz) had 3 sisters namely Gwen, Mary Jane and Myrtle. Myrtle was married to a Capone and lived in Vermillion, SD. Mary always thought that one of these 4 sisters was her natural mother. When Doc Ortburg died Bess Louise (Holt) Ortburg remarried to Virgil Lindman of Arthur, IA.

Mary Delores Hughes married 3 times - Ivan LaVern Rankin; Raymond Rick Hoesing (1910-1971); and Ben Dirkschneider (1898-1983);
