OBITUARY April 21, 1915 - Waverly Phoenix Obit

Grandmother Tegtmeier
Mrs. Sophie Tegtmeier born Borchert was born on April 5,1 837, in Oberreihen, District of Rinteln, Schaumburg. Since her parents emigrated with their children to America in 1851, she was confirmed privately before the departure. She must have been a gifted and dedicated student, because even in old age, she could recite her catechism. The Borchert family came here to America in early 1851. In the beginning, they lived for 2 years near Chicago, Ill., and then they moved to Bremer County, Iowa. They obtained a farm in Maxfield and joined the Evangelical Church in Maxfield. She married Heinrich Tegtmeier when she was 18 years old. They purchased the farm now owned by their youngest son, Carl Tegtmeier.

Heinrich Tegtmeier died on June 23, 1894. Mrs. Tegtmeier lived on the home place until 1902, when she moved to Tripoli. She lived here for 9 years. Since 1911 she has lived with various of her children, in the last years exclusively with her daughters. Since her bodily and mental strength continuously weakened, she needed constant oversight and care. She found this with her daughter Maria Haase in Tripoli, and in the last years with Caroline Heise in Plainfield. Mrs. Tegtmeier was confined to bed for about 8 days. On April 18, about 11:30 p.m. she died and went to eternal rest as a child of God. The departed had six children, of which a daughter had already died at the age of 18 months. The following children survive and are grieving: Mrs. Carolina Heise of Plainfield, Mrs. Maria Haase, Mr. H. H. C. Tegtmeier near Tripoli, Mr. F. H. Tegtmeier in Tripoli, Mr. Carl Tegtmeier near Tripoli. Additionally, she leaves 22 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and a brother, Mr. Ferdinand Borchert near Maxfield.

Mrs. Tegtmeier was 78 years and 5 days old. As long as she was healthy, she went to church regularly. Everything that she did was based on the belief that we stand in God's hands, and he will lead us to honor him for our own good. Earlier, she was a very energetic, economical housewife. Her children were her pride. She was on the best of terms with her neighbors. She was a pioneer of this county. She gave much love and experienced much love. She was a brave woman. We particularly think on the extraordinary love with which Mrs. Haase and Mrs. Heise took care of their mother. The funeral was on April 13 with Pastor Kleinau officiating. Mrs. Tegtmeier rests in the evangelical St. Peters Cemetery.

If you have come to my website via Ancestry: Several years ago the genealogy giant Ancestry absorbed the genealogy websites of Rootsweb along with personal databases posted at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project that included a large database of my own family information. I started using Rootsweb in 2000 and they gave us the capability to add, remove, and update our information at anytime and I used these options frequently to post correct and current data. Presently (2006) I am told by Ancestry that we cannot maintain our own databases, we cannot even remove them. If you find information at Ancestry with my name attached please search my website for current information, the databases posted at Ancestry contain inaccurate information. - Karen Rowe.
