Hans Heinrich Meier, son of Joh. Heinrich Meier and his wife Engel Marie nee Blume, was born in Nordberg, Amt Rodenberg, Kurhessen, on 23th Nov. 1816 and was baptised in the church at Hohnhorst and confirmed there after having had instruction. In 1843 he married Engel Maria Heisterberg. From this marriage sprang up 3 children: 1 son, Heinrich Otto, and 2 daughters, Maria and Sophia. Both daughters preceded him to Eternity, one at the age of 6 years, the other, the later wife of Christian Boedeker, died in 1880. In 1858 the deceased came to America with his family, to this place at once. In 1869 his wife died and left him as a mourning widower. He married once more the widow Sophia Buhr. About 9 years ago also this second wife died. During the last years of his loneliness and old age he stayed with his son. He had to suffer from some trouble and grief, but he enjoyed his nearly indestructible health and was spared from any illness. Until 1871 he was a loyal member of Maxfield St. Joh. and later of Crane-Creek community. He held up devotedly to Gods word and house. During the last years his increasing weekness of old age did not allow him to attend service any more. But he regularly received Holy Communion and occupied himself in his room (Altersstubchen: old mans small chamber) with Gods word and prayer and waited for the Lord. Old and satisfied with life he died on 20th July at 8 oclock a.m. He had reached an age of 92 years, 6 months and 27 days. He left 1 son, 10 grandchildren, 23 greatgrandchildren. May he have reached the silence/tranquility of Gods people by Gods grace. The burial took place last Thursday. Here in Waverly vicar Rausch was in charge in the house of mourning; in Maxfield vicar Herbst was in charge at the grave and he also held the funeral sermon.
