Christian Ludwig Buchmeier
and Sophia Sieckmann

Rolfshagen, Germany to America

Curly

Christian Buchmeier Sr. (1816-1894) and Sophia nee Sieckmann (1818-1898) first farmed at Beecher, Will Co., IL after immigrating from Rolfshagen, near Obernkirchen, Germany in 1866. Their married children Christian Jr., Wilhelm and Sophia (Mrs. Friedrich Matthies) also first settled at Beecher. In 1870 the Buchmeier, Sieckmann and Matthies'families moved west and settled at Ohiowa in Fillmore Co., NE.

One of our most difficult, yet intriguing research projects is finding the burial of our immigrant Christian Buchmeier Sr. His wife Sophie died in 1898, her burial recorded in the St. John's Lutheran Church records at Ohiowa, NE. We also know from her obituary that she is buried in the St. John's Cemetery east of Ohiowa in an unmarked grave.

Mrs. Laura Kappmeyer Wants Share of Buchmeier Estate and Gives Fillmore County Allotment.
Geneva, Neb. November 5 - Thru the channel of an unusual will, Fillmore county came into possession of the sum of six thousand, two hundred, twenty-six dollars and forty-three cents, turned over by Mrs. Laura Kappmeyer, a legatee. The will was made by Christian Buchmeier living near Ohiowa under date of Sept. 2, 1902. His death occurred January 23, 1904. To his wife Laura Buchmeier, now Mrs. Kappmeyer is bequeathed all personal property and one-third of the estate and the other two-thirds during her life-time. Half of the two-thirds was left to the children of his brother William Buchmeier, share and share alike. Provision was made that at the death of Mrs. Kappmeyer, formerly Mrs. Buchmeier, one-third of the estate be given to Fillmore county, the real estate to be sold and the proceeds to be used to better the conditions of the inmates of the county poor house. Mrs. Kappmeier preferred to take what was her share to use now and give to the county the allotment intended to eventually revert to it. The county board is looking over the building at the poor farm to see what improvements are needed and it is likely the place will be made modern as soon as possible. The large dwelling on the poor farm is well situated four miles southwest of Geneva and a present occupied by ten dependents.

If you have come to my website via Ancestry: Several years ago the genealogy giant Ancestry absorbed the genealogy websites of Rootsweb along with personal databases posted at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project that included a large database of my own family information. I started using Rootsweb in 2000 and they gave us the capability to add, remove, and update our information at anytime and I used these options frequently to post correct and current data. Presently (2006) I am told by Ancestry that we cannot maintain our own databases, we cannot even remove them. If you find information at Ancestry with my name attached please search my website for current information, the databases posted at Ancestry contain inaccurate information. - Karen Rowe.
