Geo. Buchmeier, Oldest Resident Passes Away... Uncle George Buchmeier one of the oldest inhabitants of Jefferson County and for over fifty years a resident of Plymouth and vicinity, passed away at his home here Sunday morning, March 8.

George Henry William Buckmeier was born in Deckbergen, province of Hessia in Germany on March 29, 1838. After being duly instructed in the Christian doctrines he was confirmed in the Lutheran church and has at all times remained a faithful and active member of the Lutheran church. On May 29, 1859, he was married to Friederika Vecke. This union was blessed with ten children, one preceding the father in death in infancy. His wife passed away in 1891.

In 1869 he immigrated from Germany to Illinois where he remained for 13 years, and in 1882 he moved to Jefferson County, NE, where he settled on a farm four miles east of Plymouth. For forty years he made his home on this farm, until in 1922 he moved to the town of Plymouth, with four of his children, who cared for hime in true faithful love and tenderness until the time of his death. He passed away on Sunday morning, March 5, at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 6 days.

Uncle George as he was familiarly called by his friends and acquaintances in Plymouth and vicinity, was a man of cheerful disposition, with a kind word and a pleasant smile for everyone. Up to the time of his death he was blessed with good health and was always a good provider for his family and also a large contributor to his church and other community activities. As a christian father he also provided for the spiritual welfare of his family, and brought his children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

The funeral services were held Wed. afternoon from the St. Pauls Lutheran church after a short service at the home. Rev. W. Bauman, pastor of the church, conducted the services and he was laid to rest in the St. Paul cemetery, one mile west of Plymouth. The pall-bearers were Fred Bockholdt, John Selk, Henry Merklinger, Harry Gerhardt, Harry Orth and Harvey Gerhardt.

If you have come to my website via Ancestry: Several years ago the genealogy giant Ancestry absorbed the genealogy websites of Rootsweb along with personal databases posted at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project that included a large database of my own family information. I started using Rootsweb in 2000 and they gave us the capability to add, remove, and update our information at anytime and I used these options frequently to post correct and current data. Presently (2006) I am told by Ancestry that we cannot maintain our own databases, we cannot even remove them. If you find information at Ancestry with my name attached please search my website for current information, the databases posted at Ancestry contain inaccurate information. - Karen Rowe.
