Apelern

including the villages of
Hegesdorf, Lyhren, Reinsdorf, Soldorf, Wiersen
Amt. Rodenberg, Landkreis Schaumburg
Curly

Church established about 1603.

Apuldrun (866) Apeldern (14th century)... from Old Saxonian "apuldra". Old High German "aphul" = Apfel = apple and the Gotic "triu". Old Saxonian "trio" = tree... so Apelern is "apple tree". (Information courtesy of Kurt Riebe).

Gross Hegesdorf and Klein Hegesdorf
The village of Hegesdorf (or Hittingesdorfe in the 9th century, Hiddekestorpe in 1375 and Hegestorff in 1609) may have come from the name "Hiddiko" which is derived from "Hild-" and the old High German word "hiltia" or Kampf (fight). Gross (Gr.) means great and Klein (Kl.) means little.

Soldorf
The village of Soldorf was once called Saltorf (1150) and Soltorpe (1416). The word comes from the Middle Lower German word solt or salt village. It is named after a brine source and salt works operation.

Lyhren
Litheren (1182) Lyderen (1413), Lyrem (1617)
The village of Lyhren was named perhaps from Old Saxonian hlith or Abhang which means a slope or an incline.

If you have come to my website via Ancestry: Several years ago the genealogy giant Ancestry absorbed the genealogy websites of Rootsweb along with personal databases posted at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project that included a large database of my own family information. I started using Rootsweb in 2000 and they gave us the capability to add, remove, and update our information at anytime and I used these options frequently to post correct and current data. Presently (2006) I am told by Ancestry that we cannot maintain our own databases, we cannot even remove them. If you find information at Ancestry with my name attached please search my website for current information, the databases posted at Ancestry contain inaccurate information. - Karen Rowe.
